Biodosimetry Project

Welcome to the Paulovich Lab's Protein Biodosimetry Project home page.

This Project is part of the Medical Countermeasures Against Radiological and Nuclear Threats program of the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures, and the National Institutes of Health.

Introduction: Moderate exposure to ionizing radiation can be survived with appropriate clinical intervention, which ranges from supportive care to stem cell transplant, depending on dose of exposure.  Therefore, rapid triage of exposure victims based on biodosimetry is essential for saving lives and optimizing deployment of resources during a disaster.  Current biodosimetry based on parameters such as time to onset of vomiting, lymphocyte depletion kinetics, and the appearance of dicentric chromosomes are less than ideal because they require at least 2-3 days for analysis and they are not easily automated.  The goal of this project is to develop a sensitive and automated biodosimetric assays based on rapid proteomic changes in response to radiation.

The first phase of this project was dedicated to screening for proteomic changes in response to radiation using commercially available antibodies.  The screen was done by Western Blot using commercial antibodies against protein lysates from both Lymphocytes and Lymphoblastoid Cell Lines. Below are links to the data generated during this screen.

Protein Index: An index of the proteins that we have screened in the Biodosimetry Project and links to individual Protein Pages. Each Protein Page has a general protein description, bioinformatic links, and links to our Western Blot data. The Western Blot Pages are organized by individual antibodies and contain 'Slice Images' from each blot. Each 'Slice Images' is linked to an image of the whole Western blot which are organized by date so you can assess the quality of the blots generated on a particular day.

Antibody Index: A comprehensive list of the antibodies we have used in our screen. From this index you can jump to the West Blot data by clicking on the Antibody Name or jump to the Protein Page by clicking on the Protein Name.

Novel IR Responding Proteins: A list of IR responsive proteins identified in this study and a sampling of the associated data. The data is organized by gene symbol and contains links to Protein Pages and Western Blot Pages. A PDF version can also be downloaded.

Summary Tables: A comprehensive list of all the antibodies and associated data in a PDF or an Excel file.

Protocols and Reagents: Links to Protocols and Reagents used in our lab.

Links: Various links to antibody sources and tools.
