The Microbicide Trials Network is an international collaborative focused on preventing the sexual transmission of HIV through the development and evaluation of microbicides. The McErlath Laboratory currently functions as an Immunology Core for the MTN, providing a wide variety of immunological and gene expression assays to evaluate peripherial and localized tissue and immune responses in MTN trial participants. By performing these analyses, we hope to define the localized T-cell responses that are necessary to protect against HIV infection and develop a biomarker-based mucosal toxicity assay that can be used to evaluate microbiocides.
