The strain on the left of each plate is a grande diploid ADE2/ade2 heterozygote. On the right is an ade2/ade2 homozygous strain derived spontaneously from a spontaneous petite derivative of the strain on the left.
Results are the same if petites are induced by EtBr treatment in an ade2/ade2 strain. The petite strain shown is [rho0] (confirmed by DAPI staining); [rho-] derivatives in this strain background grow even more slowly and turn a fainter red.
