The Herbold Computational Biology Program was established in January 2007 with the support of Bob and Pat Herbold. In August 2010 the program became a Center-wide program administered by the Publich Health Sciences Division, with activities from each of the Center’s scientific Divisions. The program head is Martin McIntosh. The Center-wide program is advocated within each scientific division by Steve Henikoff (Basic Sciences), Muneesh Tewari (Human Biology), Peter Gilbert (Vaccine and Infectious Disease), and Jerry Radich (Clinical Research).
Current research interests in the program
Members of the Computational Biology Program use and develop novel computational methods, often in combination with wet-laboratory experiments, to investigate biological mechanisms across a broad range of topics. Areas of interest to current faculty:
- Neoantigen discovery and its application in molecular imaging and therapeutics.
- Mathematical immunology and its application for understanding infectious and autoimmune disease.
- Molecular evolution of viruses, especially HIV.
- Mathematical descriptions of carcinogenesis and its application in explaining cancer trends.
- Macro-molecule interaction modeling and its application to understanding protein-DNA binding.

Facilities and location
The computational biology program is primarily located on the first floor of the FHCRC Arnold building; its core wet-laboratory space is on the 5th floor.
Activities in the program
- Seminars: To receive seminar announcements by email, please send an email to Abby Stimmel at astimmel@fhcrc.org.
- phyloseminar.org is a freely accessible online seminar series on phylogenetics organized by Dr. Matsen. The seminars occur approximately monthly and can be attended either interactively in real time or via recordings.
- Bioconductor is an open-source toolkit for the analysis and comprehension of high-throughput genomic data. The developers are worldwide, but the core platform development teams are hosted at the FHCRC as members of the program. At the FHCRC, Dr. Morgan leads this development team.
